Scot Field Hockey Shuts Down Centre
The College of Wooster field hockey team won its fifth game in its last six tries on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 30), defeating Centre College 2-0 in Danville, Ky, to improve to 7-2 overall.
Wooster was simply too talented for a Centre team that entered the contest with a sterling 6-1 record, as the Scots outshot the Colonels 46-9, including 29-0 in the first half.
Despite dominating play, it took awhile before Wooster got on the scoreboard, but with 6:04 remaining in the first half, it did so. The Scots took advantage of one of their 14 penalty corners on the day, as senior Miriam Esber fired the ball on goal and it deflected off a defender, into the air, and above the Centre goalie. Credited with an assist on the play was sophomore Katie McCoy.
Wooster put the match away early in the second stanza when freshman Ashley Hecker tapped in a rebound to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
The Scots' defense recorded their second-straight shutout and fourth of the season. Freshman goalie Beth Skelton needed to make just one save to preserve it, while the Colonels' Lisa Ryer had 17 saves.
Wooster, which is second in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings, return to league play on Tuesday (Oct. 2) with a trip to Oberlin College (3-3, 2-3 NCAC). Gametime in Oberlin, Ohio, is at 4:30 p.m.
