For the fifth consecutive time, The College of Wooster field hockey
team shutout Kenyon College in North Coast Athletic Conference action on
Thursday afternoon (Sept. 20), as Wooster came away from Gambier, Ohio,
with a dominating 3-0 win.
Wooster, which defeated Kenyon 4-0 in each of their two meetings
last season and 2-0 in both games in 1999, controlled Thursday's contest
throughout, outshooting and outcornering the Ladies 29-6 and 16-5,
respectively.
After nearly 20 minutes of scoreless play, the Scots got on the
board when senior Miriam Esber converted a penalty stroke for her fourth
goal of 2001. With 4:55 left in the opening half, Wooster made it 2-0 on an
unassisted score by freshman Ashley Hecker.
The Scots remained ahead by two until midway through the second
half, when senior Emily White scored off an assist from freshman Ashley
Arnold. For White, who found the back of the net 15 times during the 2000
campaign, it marked her first goal of the year.
Wooster used two goalies during the match - freshman Beth Skelton
for the first 58 minutes and sophomore Amanda Daegatano for the final 12
minutes - but neither had to come up with a save on Kenyon's six shots. The
Ladies' Tamar Chalker, on the other hand, produced a 23-save outing.
The Scots bring a 4-1 overall record and 2-1 league record into
Saturday's (Sept. 22) home match against NCAC foe Denison University (2-4,
2-0 NCAC), starting at 11 a.m.
