The College of Wooster field hockey team welcomed in the No. 5 ranked squad in NCAA Division II - Mercyhurst College - to Cindy Barr Memorial Field on Wednesday (Sept. 26), and the nationally-rated Lakers escaped with a 3-1 victory.
Despite the final two-goal margin, Wooster was extremely competitive, as it was only outshot 19-16.
Mercyhurst got on the board early with an unassisted goal by Sarah D'Emilio 4:45 into the contest, and took a 2-0 advantage on Marial Zummo's unassisted score 9:10 before halftime.
The Lakers extended their lead to three 2:51 into the second half, when Jeanna Hartman fired the ball into the Scot cage. Wooster later answered on a Kate Dunne-to-Miriam Esber goal, however, that would be the final goal of the match.
In goal, Scot freshman Beth Skelton went the first 39 minutes and made five saves before being pulled for sophomore Becky McAtee, who finished up without allowing a goal and producing seven saves over the final 31 minutes. Mercyhurst's Summer Kraatz totaled 10 saves to preserve the win.
Wooster, now 5-2 overall, has a weekend trip next to the Midwest. On Saturday (Sept. 29), it will play at North Coast Athletic Conference opponent Earlham College (2-4, 1-2 NCAC) at 1 p.m., followed the next day by a non-league match-up against Centre College (5-1) in Danville, Ky., starting at 2 p.m.
