The College of Wooster field hockey team picked up right where it
left off in 2000, as the Scots opened the new campaign this past weekend
with a pair of overtime victories in western New York. Wooster, which won
its final two games last fall also by one-goal margins, increased its
winning streak to 11 games, tying the program's record.
On Saturday (Sept. 1), junior midfielder Julie Lloyd provided the
contest's only goal 2:22 into the second 15-minute overtime session to lead
Wooster past the State University of New York at Brockport in each team's
season-opener.
Despite no goals during the first 75 minutes, the Scots dominated
play, outshooting Brockport State 17-5, including 9-0 during overtime.
In her first collegiate action, Wooster freshman goalie Beth
Skelton posted a shutout while making three saves. The Golden Eagles'
Brittany Phillips played well in defeat, tallying 12 stops in net.
On Sunday (Sept. 2), Lloyd again provided the heroics, as she
scored 6:38 into the first overtime, giving the Scots a 3-2 decision over
the University of Rochester.
Senior midfielder Miriam Esber opened the scoring against Rochester
with the conversion of a penalty corner 20:54 into the contest. Sophomore
Katie McCoy assisted on the play.
The Yellowjackets responded, though, with a goal by Kaitlin Poeth
late in the first half, and even took the lead on a score by Nicole
Ketterer with just 7:09 remaining in regulation.
However, Esber sent the game into overtime after one of her drives
hit off a Rochester defender and scooted into the back of the net with 1:40
left.
Skelton added three more saves in her second win, while the
Yellowjackets' Pamela Sheffield made two saves on the day.
Wooster will attempt to break its longest winning streak in school
history this Saturday (Sept. 8), when it hosts league rival Wittenberg
University at 1 p.m.
