On Thursday (Sept. 13), The College of Wooster field hockey team improved to 3-1 overall and evened its North Coast Athletic Conference mark to 1-1 by soundly defeating Ohio Wesleyan University 3-1.
The game, which had been originally scheduled for Wednesday but postponed by the NCAC due to Tuesday's terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, started out with an early Scot score. Just 1:45 into the contest, senior midfielder Miriam Esber scored her third goal of the year after converting on a pass from classmate Emily White, who was credited with an assist.
The visiting Battling Bishops fought back to tie it at the 13:17 mark of the opening half when senior Kristin Beveridge found the back of the net unassisted. However, Wooster came right back and took a 2-1 lead into halftime with a late goal by sophomore forward Alanna Tryder, who was assisted by Esber.
The lone score in the second stanza was off the stick of sophomore Katie McCoy, who clinched the win for the Scots on an unassisted goal with 23:56 remaining in regulation.
Defensively, Wooster used two goalies for the second-straight contest. Freshman Beth Skelton got the start and went the first 22 minutes with one save, while sophomore Becky McAtee finished up the last 48 minutes with a pair of saves. Ohio Wesleyan senior Jody Dickinson went the whole way, producing 16 saves while facing 25 shots off Scot sticks.
