Wittenberg Edges Wooster 3-2 in Field Hockey
» Box Score
Despite outshooting Wittenberg University 19-11, The College of
Wooster came away from its home and North Coast Athletic Conference opener
with a 3-2 setback to the rival Tigers.
Wooster, which saw its school-record-tying 11-game winning streak
come to an end, also outcornered the Tigers 5-3, but was not as effective
as finding the back of the net.
In the first half, it was a defensive battle with Wittenberg
scoring the only goal - an unassisted shot 6:29 into the game.
The Scots' halftime adjustments led to a quick goal, which tied
things up. Just 2:43 into the session, the Tryder twins hooked up on a
score, as Alanna knocked in a pass from Julia.
The Tigers responded, though, with two unassisted goals of their
own at the 28:17 and 20:25 marks to take a commanding 3-1 lead.
However, Wooster came back just 1:46 after Wittenberg's third score
and cut the lead to one, when senior Emily White, who played her first full
game of the year after recovering from an ankle injury, found freshman
Ashley Hecker for a goal. It marked White's first assist of the season
after leading the country in that category with 0.94 per game in 2000.
Despite several other scoring chances for the Scots, the Tigers'
second goalie of the day came in and made the lead hold up.
Wooster also used two goalkeepers, as freshman Beth Skelton got the
start and made seven saves through the first 49:35, while sophomore Becky
McAtee finished the last 20:25 with one save.
Wooster, now 2-1 overall, will try and notch its first conference
win on Wednesday (Sept. 12), when it hosts Ohio Wesleyan University at 4:30
p.m.
