The College of Wooster defeated host Rhodes College 3-1 on Sunday (Sept. 1) to earn a split at the Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee (KIT)/North Coast Athletic Conference Kickoff Challenge in Memphis, Tenn., which featured four of the top field hockey programs in the Great Lakes Region.

In its opener on Saturday afternoon (Aug. 31), Wooster was shutout for the first time since 1999 - a span of 38 contests - by Lindenwood University, the same team that ended a Scot 10-game win streak last year. Wooster trailed just 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Carly Craig, but could not contain the Lindenwood attack in the second stanza as Rachel Byers and Wendy Widmer netted goals.

Sophomore goalie Beth Skelton made seven saves in the setback, while the Lady Lions' Leah Weary stopped one shot.

The Scots came back with a strong effort against Rhodes, highlighted by the play of youngsters Ashley Hecker and Lindsay Tingley. Tingley, a first-year, got Wooster on the board first, followed by Hecker scoring off a feed from sophomore classmate Angela Arnold to give the Scots a 2-0 halftime lead. Hecker also put in the game-clincher in the second half off a pass from Tingley.

Hecker's goals were sandwiched by a Katie Walsh score for the Lynx. Skelton only needed to produce one save to preserve the victory, while 11 saves by Alice Cowley kept Rhodes in the game.

In other action, Wooster's rival, Wittenberg University topped Rhodes 2-0 on Saturday, while the result of its Sunday game with Lindenwood was not available at press time.
