Katelin Bugler’s first two goals of the 2004 season couldn’t have come at a better time for The College of Wooster field hockey team, as the Scots’ 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 26) at Denison University gave them a key North Coast Athletic Conference win.

After a 3-2 loss at Wittenberg University on Saturday night, Wooster was in danger of slipping below .500 overall and falling out of the race for the NCAC championship, but in an evenly played game against Denison, Bugler came up with two key scores.

She gave the Scots a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal in the first half only to see the Big Red strike back just 23 seconds later to even things up. It remained 1-1 until midway through the second half, when Bugler scored her fourth career goal on a penalty corner, and the Wooster defense, led by Anne Leigh’s 10 saves, made the lead hold up.

The Scots and Denison finished with 11 shots apiece.

On Saturday, Wooster had another two-goal scorer in Lindsay Tingley, but the Scots couldn’t overcome Wittenberg and its 24-game home winning streak on the turf at Edwards-Maurer Field. Leigh made eight saves in the setback.

Wooster, now 5-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play, closes its four-game road trip on Wednesday (Sept. 29) at Ohio Wesleyan University (2-6, 2-3 NCAC). Start time is at 4:30 p.m.
