Scots Strike Early in 2-1 Win Over Denison
After scoring both its goals in the last seven minutes to defeat Ohio Wesleyan University last time out, The College of Wooster reversed the trend and scored twice in the opening 20 minutes and held on for a 2-1 decision over Denison University in North Coast Athletic Coast action from Cindy Barr Field. The victory improves the Fighting Scots' mark to 3-2 in the conference and 3-5 overall, while the Big Red fall to 3-7, 2-3 NCAC. Wooster showed vast improvement in its passing game in the first half, moving the ball fluidly toward Denison's goal. At 25:27, freshman Alli Hall controlled the ball near the left wing and slapped a pass to Ashley Minton, who redirected the ball past the Big Red's 'keeper for her first score of the season. Seven minutes later, senior Katelin Bugler continued her offensive onslaught, by hitting home her third goal in two games. Bugler took the ball from the midfield and maneuvered around several defenders before finally putting the ball to rest in the back of the box. Denison cut the lead to one (2-1) at 11:23 as Becca Tavares controlled the loose ball and connected on a shot from about five yards out for the score, her second in as many games. In the second half, the Big Red held the edge offensively, firing off five shots to Wooster's two, as well has forcing four penalty corners. But the Scot defense held firm behind goalie Anne Leigh, stopping every offensive push. Leigh made three saves for the game, with two coming in the second half, while Miranda Leickly made a spectacular defensive save with under 15 minutes to go to preserve the victory. Wooster looks for its third consecutive victory of the fall this Saturday, Oct. 1, when Kenyon College (5-3, 3-3 NCAC) enters Cindy Barr Field for an 11 a.m. contest. |
