Juniata Nips Scots in Double OT
Despite an impressive showing in its season opener on Thursday night, The College of Wooster field hockey team fell to visiting Juniata College in double overtime 2-1 at Cindy Barr Memorial Field in Wooster, Ohio. The Fighting Scots begin the season 0-1, while the Eagles open their 2005 campaign 1-0. The Scots, coming off a 13-6 record from a year ago, started strong behind junior goalie Anne Leigh, who made six saves in the opening period as the two teams battled to a scoreless tie. Juniata broke the shutout with 13 minutes remaining in the second period when Sarah Bender slapped home a shot from the right side. With less than five minutes remaining, the Scot offense rallied for a series of shots, concluding with an acrobatic putback by senior Lindsay Tingley. The Eagles failed to convert in the waning moments, sending the game to the first overtime period. The highly contested game continued through the first overtime and into a second extra frame, until Bender once again came through with her second score of the game, racing around the Scot defenders and Leigh to knock the ball into the box. Leigh made a game-high 13 saves despite the loss, including three in the first overtime. Wooster will try to bounce back this Saturday when it heads to the State University of New York at Geneseo for a game with the Blue Knights. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. |
