Artman Scores Hat Trick, Scots Come Back from 3-1 Second-Half Deficit for Win

Behind a hat trick from Amanda Artman, The College of Wooster erased 2-0 and 3-1 deficits en route to a 5-3 win at Oberlin College during North Coast Athletic Conference field hockey action Thursday.

It was a rematch of last season’s NCAC Tournament championship game, which Oberlin won 3-0, and early on Thursday, the Yeowomen (4-4, 2-3 NCAC) had the advantage on the scoreboard again, despite getting thoroughly outshot by the Fighting Scots (7-2, 5-0 NCAC). Oberlin converted on its first two shots of the afternoon to take a two-goal lead midway through the first half.

Artman’s initial goal came on a breakaway with 7:58 remaining before the break, and it remained 2-1 at halftime, in spite of Wooster’s 14-3 shot advantage.

The Yeowomen (4-4, 2-3 NCAC) connected just 4:28 into the second for a two-goal margin again. The Scots got right back within striking distance when Brittany Montgomery scored on a penalty corner 3:44 later, with an assist from Miranda Leickly.

Time started to become a factor, as Wooster was still down 3-2 when the clock wound down under six minutes. But, the Scots were able to tie it up on their 19th corner of the day, with Leickly-to-Montgomery being the scoring combination again, which marked the latter’s squad-leading 11th goal this season.

With less than three minutes to go, Artman gave Wooster its first lead of the day (4-3), scoring off an Anlyn Addis feed, and just 55 seconds later, Artman added another unassisted breakaway goal. Ironically, it was Addis, who posted the Scots’ last hat trick, coming a little over a year ago (Sept. 5, 2005) against Earlham College.

Next, Wooster looks to maintain its perfect NCAC record this Saturday when it hosts last-place Earlham College (1-6, 0-4 NCAC) at 11 a.m.
