The College of Wooster field hockey team received a spark from its offense, scoring a season-high three goals, which was just enough to get by host Oberlin College 3-2 during Wednesday afternoon’s North Coast Athletic Conference affair.

The match-up was scoreless until Wooster (2-4, 1-3 NCAC), which had only three goals total during its first five games, got on the board late in the opening half, sparking a three-goal outburst over a 3:44 time period. First, sophomore Brittany Montgomery rattled the cage for the first time this season with an assist from freshman Nina Dine. Oberlin (3-5, 2-2 NCAC) answered just two minutes later and it appeared that it would be 1-1 at halftime, however, Scot freshman Taylor Lamborn broke through with just :04 left, tallying her first collegiate goal.

Wooster increased that lead to 3-1 midway through the second half when another of the team’s dozen first-years, Eileen Barrer, connected on her first collegiate score. The Yeowomen cut it to a one-goal margin at the 2:30 mark, but it was too little, too late.

Statistically, it was an evenly played contest. The Scots had a 20-15 advantage in the shot department, and both had plenty of penalty corner opportunities, with Oberlin owning a 13-12 edge in that category.

Wooster sophomore goalkeeper Izzy Maffetone collected four saves during the victory.

The Scots will be right back in action on Saturday at Earlham College (1-4, 0-4 NCAC) at 1 p.m.
