The College of Wooster converted on three of its four penalty corners during the first half, opening up a 3-0 lead at the break, and went on to a 3-1 victory over rival Wittenberg University during Saturday’s North Coast Athletic Conference field hockey match-up.

Wooster (5-4, 4-3 NCAC), now on a four-game winning streak, scored just 4:30 into the action when Briana Lynch rattled the cage with an assist from Eileen Barrer. It remained 1-0 until fairly late in the half when Barrer put in a goal via an assist by Nina Dine, following a penalty corner, at the 7:45 mark. Then, the Fighting Scots took complete control, as with just :16 remaining, Lynch would score unassisted for a three-goal cushion. Noteworthy, Lynch, Barrer, and Dine are all freshmen.

Wittenberg (5-3, 2-2 NCAC), which was outshot 12-2 during the first half, would prevent the shutout late in regulation, as Tori Casanta found an opening for an unassisted tally around the eight-minute mark.

Wooster goalie Izzy Maffetone produced five saves, all in the second half, on 16 total shots to help preserve the win, while her counterpart, Sarah Umberger, was credited with four saves for the Tigers.

The Scots have a week off until their next game, as they will host DePauw University (5-4) Saturday as part of “Homecoming” weekend.
