The College of Wooster golf team’s 2006-07 debut was a successful one, as the Fighting Scots finished third overall at the 10-team Hiram College Fall Invitational this weekend (Sept. 16-17), which was played at Fowler’s Mill Golf Course in Chesterland, Ohio. Wooster only placed as high as third once out of 10 tournaments played during the 2005-06 season.

The only teams to finish ahead of Wooster, which scored 13 strokes lower Sunday (307) than Saturday (320), were North Coast Athletic Conference powers Ohio Wesleyan University (607) and Allegheny College (611), both coming off top-10 showings at the 2005 NCAA Div. III Championships. The Scots moved past Mt. Union College (632) and Wittenberg University (635) during Sunday’s 18, and were comfortably ahead of Denison University (649), Wabash College (666), host Hiram (674), Kenyon College (724), and Lake Erie College (778) throughout the event.

Individually, senior multi-sport star Andy Van Horn was in the running for medalist honors. Van Horn, a two-year starter for Wooster’s nationally-ranked basketball team, carded a 76 and a 73, on the par-72, 7002-yard course to finish at +5, just one shot off the pace of Allegheny’s Chad Kosanovic and Wabash’s Jordan Vice. Kosanovic won in a playoff.

Also shooting a pair of 70s and ending up in the top-10 for the Scots was Sean Glaser. The sophomore’s highest finish last season was a tie for 39th, but he kicked off this campaign with a 76 and a 79 to tie for    ninth-place (155).

Joining Van Horn and Glaser with sub-80 rounds on Sunday were juniors Erik Shoger (76) and Patrick Lynch (79). Lynch ended up in a tie for 28th (164) and Shoger in a tie for 30th (165), while senior Matt Mellott scored for Wooster Saturday (83) and tied for 32nd overall (166).

The Scots continue their season at the Wittenberg Fall Invitational on Sept. 30-Oct. 1.
