The Legends at Massillon | NCAC Team Standings | NCAC Individual Standings
MASSILLON, Ohio – The College of Wooster golf team capped the 2006-07 season by serving as host to the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships this Saturday and Sunday at the Legends of Massillon, where the Fighting Scots tied for fourth-place with a total score of 965 over the 54 holes. Ohio Wesleyan University captured the NCAC postseason crown with an 897, just 33-over par, as well as the conference’s new season-long championship, which encompasses the results from three regular season events plus the NCAC Championships. The Battling Bishops’ overall score was 2703 and they received the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Div. III Championships. In contention for an at-large bid to nationals is Allegheny College, which was runner-up at both the postseason championship (919) and in the overall standings (2763). Denison University rounded into its top form for the NCAC Championships, finishing third (952), but was fifth for the season (2881), while tying with Wooster in the postseason was Wittenberg University (965). The rival Tigers nipped the Scots for third-place in the NCAC team standings (2856-2869). Rounding out the nine-team field were Wabash College (973, 2961), Hiram College (992, 3022), Oberlin College (1078, not eligible), and Kenyon College (1102, 3206). Ohio Wesleyan swept the individual awards, as Kyle Martin won the Bob Nye Award for earning medalist honors at the NCAC Championships (70-73-76), Doug McCullough was the recipient of the Dick Gordin Award as the NCAC Player of the Year for not only his efforts on the course, but for academics, citizenship, and sportsmanship, and Jon Whithaus was Coach of the Year. Leading the Scots were senior Andy Van Horn and junior Pat Lynch, as they tied for eighth overall at the postseason championship. Van Horn shot three rounds in the 70s (76-78-79), while Lynch carded team-lows over the first 18 and final 18 (73-84-76). They both earned all-NCAC honors, with Van Horn taking a spot on the first-team for the second time in his career after tallying a 702 at the four required NCAC events in 2006-07. Lynch was second-team with a season-long NCAC score of 722. Also for Wooster, sophomore Sean Glaser and junior Erik Shoger scored during all three rounds of the NCAC Championships. Overall, Glaser tied for 22nd (79-84-82) and Shoger tied for 30th (82-86-86), while gaining championship experience was freshman Tim Sullivan, starting in place of senior Matt Mellott, who missed the first NCAC event of his career after coming down with an illness. Sullivan was just a few strokes from scoring for the Scots each round and ended up 35th overall (84-88-87). |
