Kyle Witucky» NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Awardees (male winter sport participants)PDF

Soon-to-be College of Wooster graduate Kyle Witucky (Zanesville, Ohio / Zanesville), a four-year starter at point guard for the school’s nationally-ranked basketball team, was one of 29 male winter sport participants nationwide to be awarded a postgraduate scholarship from the National Collegiate Athletic Association, announced the NCAA recently (May 3).

The $7,500 award is given out annually to 174 student-athletes, who are selected by an NCAA committee that screens candidates whom have an overall grade-point average of at least 3.200, have performed and behaved with distinction on and off the playing field, and intend to continue their academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree.

Witucky is the ninth Wooster student-athlete, and third men’s basketball player (Matt Schlingman, 2005; Scott Meech, 1995), to win the prestigious honor over the last 13 years. Also of note, another Fighting Scot basketball player, John Ellenwood, was a finalist for one in 2000 and later earned a scholarship offer when other winners elected not to utilize the postgraduate award.

“First, we’re thrilled that Kyle has been awarded this prestigious honor,” commented long-time Wooster head coach Steve Moore. “Kyle is very deserving. He has distinguished himself as an outstanding player and an outstanding student in four years at Wooster.”

The NCAA postgraduate scholarship caps a remarkable career for Witucky, who also was a three-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference honoree, a two-time All-Great Lakes Region pick (D3hoops.com), one of just two finalists in NCAA Div. III, and 16 overall, for the 2006 Bob Cousy Award (nation’s top collegiate point guard), and a 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team honoree. Witucky also was voted by his peers as the team’s Most Valuable Player, despite there being two others on the squad whom were All-Americans.

For his career, Witucky broke the NCAA Div. III national record for games played with 123 and he started every one of them. He also set a Wooster four-year record for team wins, leading the Scots to a 109-14 record (.866) as well as three conference championships (2003, 2005, 2006) and final national rankings of No. 2 (2002-03), No. 5 (2003-04), No. 8 (2004-05), and No. 9 (2005-06). Statistically, Witucky totaled 1,046 points (tied for 21st in school history), 401 assists (3rd), 205 3-pointers made (2nd), a .428 3-point percentage (6th), and 132 steals (7th).

Next, Witucky, a political science major, plans to go to law school where he’ll use his NCAA postgraduate scholarship. Kyle is the son of Steve and Carolyn Witucky of Zanesville, Ohio.
