WOOSTER, Ohio - The College of Wooster men's basketball team's 92-59 victory over Kenyon College on Saturday night was never in doubt following a 17-0 Wooster run midway through the first half, but it will be remembered by Scot fans for a long time, as three significant milestones took place.
Wooster senior guard Antwyan Reynolds (Mansfield, Ohio / Mansfield Senior) became the 24th player in school history to reach the 1000-point plateau and broke the school record for career steals, while veteran head coach Steve Moore picked up his 400th career victory.
Reynolds' first milestone came with 8:57 to go in the opening stanza, when he surpassed Ryan Gorman, who is currently playing professionally in Ireland, as the Scots' all-time leader in steals. Gorman totaled 210 from 1995-99 and by the end of the evening Reynolds had 213 successful swipes to his credit.
With 8:11 left in the game, Reynolds etched his mark in Wooster history for the second time by sinking a pair of free throws to reach an even 1000 points in his 93rd career game. Overall, the 5-10 point finished with 11 points, five assists, and five steals in 21 minutes against Kenyon.
Moore's milestone makes him the 31st NCAA Division III coach to win 400. He now owns a record of 313-84 in 15 seasons at Wooster, following a six-year stint at Muhlenberg College where he went 87-65.
As for the game, the Scots took an early 28-18 lead before everything came together. At that point, Wooster took off on the aforementioned run and never trailed by less than 19 the rest of the way.
Junior forward Bryan Nelson (Kettering, Ohio / Kettering Fairmont) led the charge for Wooster with a game-high 19 points and a team-best seven rebounds in 24 minutes.
Supporting Nelson and Reynolds was a balanced attack that saw six others score eight or more, including 10 each from sophomore forward Randy Sistrunk (Canton, Ohio / Canton McKinley) and freshman forward Blake Mealer (Wauseon, Ohio / Liberty-Benton).
Other notables included sophomore guards Rodney Mitchell (Elida, Ohio / Elida) and Robert Sims (Bedford Heights, Ohio / St. Peter Chanel). They each had five assists in the opening half alone.
Three players reached double figures in scoring for the Lords, but senior Chad Plotke, who came into the game as the leading scorer in the North Coast Athletic Conference at 24.4 points per game, was held to just 11 points on 3-of-11 shooting from the field. Pacing Kenyon was senior Brian Porter with 14 tallies, and sophomore Andy Flores chipped in 10 points in the loss.
The Scots, who have now won three-straight and improved to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference, will head to Texas following finals this week. Wooster will play Texas Lutheran University on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 4 p.m. CST, and Southwestern University on Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m. CST.
The Lords slipped to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in the NCAC.
