Scots Aim to End Season On a Positive Note at Kenyon
Having won 10 games for the first time since the 1996 campaign, The College of Wooster is looking to close out the regular season with another victory this week. On Saturday, May 3, the Fighting Scots will visit North Coast Athletic Conference foe Kenyon College (10-2, 3-1 NCAC), which is currently among the “others receiving votes” of the coaches’ top-20 poll, for a 1 p.m. opening face-off. The game will help sort out the final conference standings, with Kenyon still in contention for a tie for first-place. Wooster last defeated the Lords in 2005 (13-4), but has dropped 11-2 and 16-5 decisions the last two years. Last Week: The Scots split a pair of contests, which moved their records to 10-3 overall and 1-3 in the NCAC. On April 22, Wooster cruised past Tri-State University, a first-year program, by a count of 14-6. The Scots utilized a six-goal second quarter to take an 8-2 halftime lead and then started the third quarter with a 3-1 run before settling for the eight-goal win. Mark Weschler (Silver Spring, Md. / Our Lady of Good Counsel) led all players with a six-point game, scoring four goals and assisting on two others. Matt Pullara (Centennial, Colo. / Arapahoe) netted a hat trick while collecting eight groundballs and winning 17-of-20 face-offs. Additionally, Pat Coyne (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) produced a two-goal, two-assist effort, Chris Gatsch (Princeton, N.J. / Blair Academy) tossed in a pair of goals, and Matt Biester (Wallingford, Pa. / Strath Haven) was credited with six saves throughout the game at goalie. On April 26, rival Wittenberg University scored the only three goals of the fourth quarter to upend Wooster 11-10. It marked the first time the Tigers beat the Scots since 2002 – a stretch of eight games. It was close throughout, as Wooster held a 6-5 halftime advantage and then bumped it up to a three-goal margin (8-5) before Wittenberg rallied for the first of two three-goal runs during the second half. Weschler led the Scots again with another four-goal game, while Gatsch threw in a pair. Also of note, Coyne and Tim Lee (Orion, Mich. / Detroit Jesuit) each contributed one goal and two assists, and Biester came up with an even dozen saves. |
