Scots at OWU for Key NCAC Game, Host Colorado College Sunday
After back-to-back one-game weeks, The College of Wooster will play twice a week each of the next three. This week’s schedule is highlighted by a key North Coast Athletic Conference affair at Ohio Wesleyan University (5-4, 1-0 NCAC) on Wednesday, April 9, at 4:30 p.m. The Fighting Scots likely need a win to stay in the race for the conference crown. Three of the teams’ last four meetings have been very close, with 14-13 and 10-9 Ohio Wesleyan wins in 2006 and 2007, respectively, and a 7-5 Wooster victory in the 2004 season. This Sunday, April 13, the Scots will be hosting traditional non-league foe Colorado College (5-2), currently in the “others receiving votes” category of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association NCAA Div. III top-20 poll, at noon. Last spring, Wooster sprinted out to an 11-1 halftime lead en route to a 12-4 decision over Colorado College. Last Week: The Scots won their lone contest, upping their record to 6-1 overall. On April 2, Wooster scored four goals over a 3:04 stretch, as part of a seven-goal third quarter, which paved the way for a 14-8 win at Adrian College in non-conference action. The Scots got out to a commanding 6-1 lead midway through the second quarter, however, Adrian, a first-year varsity program, did not go away. The Bulldogs tallied two goals during the final five minutes of the opening half and carried that momentum over, as they connected on another just 1:36 into the third quarter to pull within 6-4. It was still a two-goal margin at 8-6 late into the third, but then Wooster’s offense went on a roll. Mark Weschler (Silver Spring, Md. / Our Lady of Good Counsel) started the flurry with an unassisted score at the 5:37 mark, and just 26 seconds later, he assisted on a Conor Hannan (Wiscasset, Maine / North Yarmouth Academy) goal. Weschler would find the back of the net again, this time on a man-up opportunity with 4:25 remaining in the third, and Hannan tacked on another goal less than two minutes later for a six-goal cushion (13-7). Hannan produced a career game, as the senior attacker scored four goals. He had just one previous hat trick in his career. Weschler matched him with a four-goal outing, and they each passed one assist as well. Additionally, Matt Pullara (Centennial, Colo. / Arapahoe) posted two goals and one assist while winning 14-of-20 face-offs, Cole Simmons (Calabasas, Calif. / Chaminade) recorded two goals, and Alex Mies (Birmingham, Mich. / Cranbrook Kingswood School) led all players with three assists. Defensively, the Scots utilized two goalies, with Calvin Todd (Deerfield, N.H. / Concord) playing the final 24:33, during which he made eight saves, including seven in the fourth quarter, compared to just three goals allowed. |
