The College of Wooster women's lacrosse team opened the season in impressive style, defeating M.I.T. 13-6 Thursday in Panama City, Fla.
The men's lacrosse team, however, was not as fortunate in its North Coast Athletic Conference opener on Wednesday (March 22), as the Scots fell to Wittenberg in Springfield 12-5.
The women were led by senior Maggie Buckingham, who scored four goals. Sophomore Emily White added three goals and freshman Beth Hemminger two for Wooster, which won its first season opener since 1996. Tallying single goals for the Scots were seniors Becca Turner and Carly Bronson, junior Katelyn Connolly and freshman Miriam Esber. In goal, sophomore Kim Christiansen stopped 15 shots in her first collegiate start.
After winning its season opener, the men's lacrosse team has dropped three straight, including Wednesday's setback to Wittenberg. The Scots fell behind 4-2 after one quarter and was never able to make up the deficit. The turning point in the game may have come at the end of the first half, when the Tigers scored with just two second left before halftime to take a 6-3 lead.
Leading the way for Wooster was freshman Colin Hartnett, who scored three goals. Freshman Ahren Olson and sophomore Kyle Plumly each collected one goal.
