A near record-setting performance from sophomore Mike MacMaster highlighted the opening weekend of 2002 for The College of Wooster men's lacrosse squad, as it easily prevailed in the consolation game of the Guilford Tournament 15-1 over Marietta College in Greensboro, N.C., on Sunday (March 17).

On Saturday, Wooster lost its opener 12-5, despite three goals from sophomore Steve Burton and a 14-save effort from Andrew DeBord in his first collegiate game, to a strong Mary Washington College team, which went on take the tournament over host Guilford College 10-3.

After having been shutout versus Mary Washington, MacMaster exploded for 11 points against Marietta, marking a career-high for scoring and falling just one point shy of tying the school record for most points in a game (12). He began his personal assault early, assisting on three of the Scots' first four goals and then finding the back of the net himself with :02 left in the first quarter to give Wooster a 5-1 lead.

MacMaster, who finished second on the team in scoring as a freshman, went on to score twice in the second and added an assist to help the Scots out to a commanding 10-1 halftime advantage. He punched in two more goals and dished out two assists in the second stanza.

Complementing MacMaster on Sunday were Burton, who had four goals and a pair of assists, veteran Colin Hartnett, who scored three times and added a pair of assists, and freshman Bobby Koehler, who opened the scoring with an unassisted tally and added another goal in the second quarter.

Upon returning home, Wooster (1-1) will play its home opener against St. Vincent College on Sunday (March 24) with the opening face-off slated for 1 p.m.
