The College of Wooster scored two goals in the final 11 seconds to cap a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Wittenberg University in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Carl Dale Memorial Field on Saturday afternoon (April 13). Playing without its leading scorer, Wooster (4-3) put together a four-goal run late in the third quarter to take its first lead of the day at 7-6. However, Wittenberg (4-5) answered quickly and went on to tally three of the next four scores to retake the advantage (9-8). With 5:20 left, Scot senior Adam Price found the back of the net for the fourth time to tie it up at nine. But the Tigers again had a response, as their top scorer on the day, Cory Essig, notched his third goal with 2:10 remaining. The clock wound down under 30 seconds and it appeared that the visitors were going to win, but Steve Burton put one past Kyle Prussing at the :11 mark to tie the game for the sixth time. Wooster won the ensuing face-off, sprinted down the field, and with just one tick left, Bobby Koehler fired in the game-winner. Burton led all scorers with a five-point effort - two goals and three assists - while joining him and Price with multiple point days were Greg Wilcox, who had two goals, and Koehler, who added an assist. The Scots received another outstanding effort from their young goalkeeper, Andrew DeBord, as he turned away 19 shots, while Prussing finished with 14 saves on the other end of the field. Wooster has a week off before its next tilt, when it welcomes Washington & Jefferson College, a first-year varsity program, to town on Saturday, April 20, at 1 p.m. | ||
