Tom Canfield scored a season-high three goals off the bench for Wooster.

After a tightly-contested first half, The College of Wooster men’s lacrosse team exploded for a 6-1 goal advantage in the second en route to a 10-5 victory over host Wittenberg University during Saturday’s (April 10) North Coast Athletic Conference action in Springfield, Ohio.

With two league games remaining, Wooster (5-3, 2-1 NCAC) is in position for a piece of its first-ever conference championship. The Scots are currently tied for first in the loss column with perennial powers Denison University (3-5, 2-1 NCAC) and Ohio Wesleyan University (5-4, 3-1 NCAC), and the trio very well could share the 2004 NCAC title.

On Saturday, Wooster started a little slow on the artificial turf at Wittenberg’s Edwards-Maurer Field, as the contest was knotted 4-4 at halftime. However, the Scots got off to a quick start in the third quarter and never looked back.

Individually, senior midfielder Tom Canfield threw in a season-high three goals off of the bench for Wooster, while chipping in two goals apiece were Andy Boylan and Austin Taylor.

Other notables for the Scots included a one-goal, two-assist outing from Shawn Handy as well as one goal and one assist from Steve Burton.

Rounding out Wooster’s multiple scorers were Steve Burton and Tom Canfield, each of whom tossed in two goals.

Wooster received another solid defensive performance, as the Scots have now allowed single-digit goal totals in seven of eight games this spring. Courter Shimeall saved 10 Tiger shots, while among those making things easy on the goalkeeper were starting defenders Sam Carmony, Mike Kavulic, and David Loudenslager.

For Wittenberg, Cory Windle scored a team-high two goals and Kyle Prussing made 15 saves.

Next up for Wooster is a non-conference home game against Washington & Jefferson College (0-5) on Thursday (April 15) at 4 p.m.
