Eleven Different Scots Score Goals in High-Scoring Affair
The Washington & Jefferson College and College of Wooster men’s lacrosse teams put on an offensive clinic Thursday afternoon, combining for 35 goals, including 24 in the second half alone, with the home-standing Fighting Scots emerging as 22-13 winners in the non-conference match-up at a breezy, sunny John P. Papp Stadium. It marked the most combined goals in a Wooster game since 2000’s 27-8 loss to Kenyon College. Washington & Jefferson (0-8) hung around for most of the first half, and at one point, scored goals just 1:03 apart to pull within 6-3. The Scots (4-5), who showed no ill effects from playing less than 24 hours prior, scored the final two goals, though, to take a five-score cushion into intermission. It stood 9-4 five minutes into the third quarter before the offensive fireworks really started. Wooster scored six goals during a 4:18 stretch, including one when the Scots were a man-down. The Presidents answered with a 3-1 run over the last three minutes to make it 16-7. The two teams equaled the 12-goal third quarter with a dozen more in the fourth. This time, they scored six apiece, capped by Jordan Casey’s unassisted goal for Wooster with 2:21 remaining. Pacing the Scots’ attack was Eric McKinney, who finished with a career-high five goals as well as a pair of assists. Hisham Hassan, Austin Taylor, and Chris Vaccaro each scored hat tricks, with Hassan also dishing out two assists. The top passer of the day was Wooster’s Brendan Hayes, who recorded five assists to go with a goal. The sophomore had two career assists entering the game. Additional multiple-point producers for the Scots were Conor Hannan, who had two goals and one assist, Shawn Handy, who posted a one-goal, two-assist afternoon, and Andy Boylan, who scored once and helped out on another goal. Ed Farruggia actually led all scorers with six goals and two assists for Washington & Jefferson, while Tim Huckestein added four goals and three assists in the loss. Defensively, Wooster held the Presidents to 2-for-12 on extra-man opportunities and starting goalie Courter Shimeall made three saves before being pulled with 3:42 to go in the third. Washington & Jefferson’s Spooky Reed netted 14 saves on 58 Scot shots while playing all 60 minutes. Wooster has the weekend off from competition, as it will next be in action on Wednesday (April 20). That afternoon, the Scots will host conference peer Kenyon College (4-5). |
