In a battle of non-conference unbeaten teams, the College of Wooster men’s lacrosse team scored a goal :11 into the first overtime session, edging Goucher College by a 7-6 count Wednesday afternoon in Towson, Md. With the victory, Wooster remains undefeated at 4-0, marking the first time since 1991 it hasn’t suffered a loss through the first four games of the season, and also notches its initial victory over the Gophers in the teams’ second-ever meeting.

Wooster jumped on the scoreboard first just :41 into the game on an unassisted goal from Cole Simmons. The hosts evened the score nearly six minutes later on a score by Adam Pietrocarlo, before Wooster rebounded with a 3-0 run over the next 11:15 of action with goals by Chris Gatsch at 6:41 of the first period, Conor Hannan at 5:43 of the first, and Tim Lee at 13:00 of the second stanza.

Following a goal by Goucher’s Brian Hoge at the 8:03 mark of the second period that brought the Gophers to within two, Alex Mies notched his seventh goal of the young season on a man-up opportunity with 2:16 left, giving Wooster a 5-2 advantage headed into the break.

Out of the halftime break, Goucher regrouped and swung the momentum their way with two more markers in the third while holding Wooster scoreless, and trailed by one (5-4) headed into the final period. The Gophers continued that positive surge, tying the game up with 12:39 left on Hoge’s second tally of the afternoon.

Wooster came storming back, taking a one-goal advantage :56 later on an unassisted goal by Mark Weschler.

The advantage lasted a little over 11 minutes, when Goucher’s Dave Huff recorded the game-tying goal with 1:35 left in the game to send it to overtime.

Goucher (3-1) controlled the opening faceoff of the extra session, before Matt Pullara slapped the ball away and picked up the groundball, sprinted down the field and found Hannan for the game-winning goal.

Hannan led Wooster with two goals, while five other players scored for the Scots. In net, Matt Biester picked up the win, matching a season-high with 11 saves.

The Gophers' Hoge and Duff tied Hannan for scoring honors, and Sam Fitzpatrick and Alan Tiet finished with an assist.

The Scots will look to continue their winning ways on Saturday, when they travel to Neumann College in Aston, Pa. (0-4) for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
