Mies Paces Wooster Past Mount St. Joseph, 11-1
Looking for a 2-0 start for the third straight season, the College of Wooster got four goals from sophomore Alex Mies, and the Fighting Scots rolled to an 11-1 victory Wednesday evening at the College of Mount St. Joseph during non-conference men’s lacrosse action.
Wooster jumped out quickly against the Lions, netting two goals in the first 6:27 of action on scores by Conor Hannan and Cole Simmons. Following a Mount St. Joseph score with 3:56 left in the first period, Wooster racked up five unanswered goals, capped off by Hannan’s second goal of the game with :05 left on the second quarter clock, and possessed a 7-1 lead headed into the break.
In the second half, the host Lions didn’t have an answer for Mies, when the Wooster sophomore collected three-straight goals in the third and fourth quarters, and picked up an assist on the Scots’ final goal from Tim Lee for the final 11-1 count.
Individually, in addition to Mies’ five points, Pat Coyne, Hannan and Simmons finished with two goals apiece. Mark Weschler recorded a team-high six assists, while Coyne and Mies each recorded a helper.
On the defensive end, the Scots limited Mount St. Joseph to 14 shots compared to 52 attempts for Wooster, and goalie Matt Biester made four saves picking up the victory.
Wooster continues its early season schedule this Sunday with a road trip to perennial power Widener University (1-1). Faceoff in Chester, Pa. is scheduled for 1 p.m.
