The College of Wooster men’s lacrosse team scored twice during the final minute of the third quarter, extending its advantage to 9-5, and went on to a 12-6 victory at Washington & Jefferson College on Wednesday night.

Wooster (8-2) was hanging on to a 7-5 lead late into the third quarter, when Mark Weschler scored right after picking up a groundball to finish what was a two-minute offensive possession. With :51 remaining in the period, upstart Washington & Jefferson (3-8) won the ensuing face-off, however, the Fighting Scots were still able to get the ball back and quickly converted it into an Alex Mies’ 13th goal of the season, assisted by Graham Zimmerman, at the :27 mark.

Matt Pullara then extended Wooster’s lead to 10-5 early in the fourth and the Presidents never threatened again.

The Scots had a big first quarter, staking out to a 5-2 lead, which included two goals from Weschler.

Washington & Jefferson won the second quarter, pulling within 6-4.

For the game, Wooster’s goals came from just five players, as Tim Lee, Pullara, and Weschler each had hat tricks. Mies was the top overall point producer with two goals and two assists.

Tim Huckestein paced the Presidents, scoring twice and assisting on another goal.

After Washington & Jefferson made it 5-3 early in the second quarter, Matt Biester took over in goal for the Scots and went on to make eight saves in the six-goal win.

This Saturday afternoon will be the 2008 home finale for Wooster, as winless Oberlin College (0-6, 0-3 NCAC) will visit John P. Papp Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
