Winners of three in a row, The College of Wooster men’s soccer squad is seeking to extend its streak during a pair of matches this week. First, on Wednesday, Sept. 19, the Fighting Scots welcome Muskingum College (4-2) to Carl Dale Memorial Field for a non-conference tilt at 5 p.m. Wooster is 10-2 in the all-time series with the Muskies, including a 1-0 shutout victory during 2006. This Saturday, Sept. 22, the Scots will kickoff their North Coast Athletic Conference schedule at Wabash College (2-5, 0-1 NCAC) at 11 a.m. Last season, Wooster was 4-3-2 in NCAC games to finish in fifth-place, just missing out on the league’s four-team postseason tourney. The Scots are 7-2 in nine total meetings with the Little Giants, including a 2-0 triumph in Wooster last fall.
Last Week: The Scots won both of their non-league matches to go above the .500 mark for the first time this year at 3-2.
On Sept. 13, Wooster played a man-down for over 86 minutes due to an early red card, but still came away the victor in its home opener, edging Otterbein College 1-0. The only score was booted in by sophomore Josh Madson (St. Louis, Mo. / Ladue Horton Watkins), as he touched in a cross off a free kick from classmate Chase Beach (Winter Springs, Fla. / Trinity Prep). It was Madson’s first career goal and Beach’s first career assist. Combining on the shutout were freshmen Jordan O’Boyle (Hudson, Ohio / Western Reserve Academy) and Patryk Tenorio (Tawas City, Mich. / St. Stephen’s Episcopal – Texas), with O’Boyle playing the first half and collecting two saves and Tenorio tallying five saves during the second.
On Sept. 15, the Scots found themselves in an early 1-0 hole at John Carroll University, but then easily cruised past the Blue Streaks 3-1 during a match that was televised by SportsTime Ohio. John Carroll lit up the scoreboard 13:53 into the action only to see Wooster take a lead that it would not relinquish less than 15 minutes later. First, Karl Ruter (Glenview, Ill. / Glenbrook South) knotted things up in the 21st minute when he scored off a direct kick, marking the sophomore’s third goal in four games played this year. During the 29th minute, the Scots took advantage of a breakaway, with Scott Buckwald (Seville, Ohio / Cloverleaf) finishing the scoring opportunity off an assist from Jay Keener (Wadsworth, Ohio / Wadsworth). Early in the second half, Wooster gained a two-goal cushion when Nick Waychoff (Cleveland Hts., Ohio / Cleveland Heights) converted a pass from Tim Vandervaart (North Canton, Ohio / Hoover). Tenorio and O’Boyle each tallied two saves while playing the first and second half, respectively. |
