Following an uncharacteristic 0-2 start, The College of Wooster men’s soccer team will attempt to turn things around in its lone match this week, when the Fighting Scots visit Marietta College (1-0-1) Saturday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. Wooster is 8-3-4 all-time against the Pioneers, including 3-0-2 since losing to them in 1999. In their meeting last fall, the Scots trailed 1-0 late into regulation, but pulled out a 2-1 overtime win with goals in the 88th and 95th minutes.

Last Week: Wooster lost a pair of neutral-site matches on the campus of Oberlin College to begin 2007.

On Aug. 31, the Scots streak of seven consecutive victories in season openers came to an end, as Lake Erie College got past Wooster 3-1. After a scoreless first half, Lake Erie came up with a spurt to take a 2-0 lead early in the second. The Scots pulled back within one with a little over seven minutes remaining on a goal by sophomore midfielder Trevor Day (Wadsworth, Ohio / Wadsworth), assisted by Warren Swegal (Sewickley, Pa. / Quaker Valley). It marked Day’s first collegiate goal. Defensively, two goalies each played a half for Wooster, with freshman Patryk Tenorio (Tawas City, Mich. / St. Stephen’s Episcopal – Texas) making two saves during the first.

On Sept. 2, Heidelberg College put the finishing touches on a tough weekend for the Scots, jumping out to a 2-0 lead and later breaking a 2-2 tie with a decisive goal. After falling behind by two, Wooster came out of the halftime break re-energized and knotted the score during the next 15 minutes of play on goals by Karl Ruter (Glenview, Ill. / Glenbrook South) and Scott Buckwald (Seville, Ohio / Cloverleaf), with assists coming from Aaron Oster-Beal (Littleton, Colo. / Littleton) and Brenton Allen (Newark, Ohio / Granville), respectively. A pair of Scot goalies each played a half again, with Tenorio suffering the tough-luck loss while making two saves during the second.
