Men's Soccer Ties Carthage in the Rain
Box Score
The College of Wooster and Carthage College men's soccer teams
battled each other and Mother Nature to a 3-3 tie today (Sept. 10) at Carl
Dale Memorial Field in Wooster, Ohio.
The match began with a few sprinkles and a lot of offense, but as
the sprinkles turned into downpours, including a 45-minute rain delay, both
teams' offenses disappeared.
Within the first eight minutes of the contest, Wooster took a 2-0
lead, thanks to goals from juniors Dan Kelly and Richard Albeit. Kelly's
score came on an assist from classmate Chad Spurgeon in the seventh minute
of play, while Albeit converted a penalty kick less than 60 seconds later.
Carthage closed within one towards the end of the first half when
freshman Mu'awiyah Kader scored an unassisted goal off a rebound in the
39th minute.
The offense picked up again in the early part of the second half,
as the Scots made it a 3-1 game on senior Kyle Abraham's first goal of the
year off a pass from freshman Robert Rosenfeld in the match's 50th minute.
But, less than five minutes later, the game was knotted at three with
Redmen goals coming from sophomore Jon Purcell and senior Brent Malmstrom.
Statistically, Wooster outshot Carthage 31-13, but junior goalie
Steve Szymanski kept the Redmen in the match with 12 saves. On the other
side of the field, Wooster senior Adam Wegner made four saves.
Wooster now owns a record of 4-0-1 on the season, and will next
travel to Capital for a non-conference showdown on Wednesday (Sept. 13) at
4:30 p.m.
