Scot Men Booters Play Nationally-Ranked Opponent to Overtime
The College of Wooster men's soccer team presented
nationally-ranked and undefeated Kalamazoo College with a stern test on
Sunday (Sept. 9) before succumbing 2-1 in overtime.
Kalamazoo, which was No. 15 in last week's NCAA Division III poll
as voted on by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and
coming off a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over No. 8-ranked John Carroll
University on Saturday, needed 12 extra minutes to squeak past Wooster.
After a scoreless opening half, the Hornets struck first with an
unassisted goal, however, the Scots came right back and evened the match
just 11 minutes later on freshman Greg Wilcox's first collegiate score.
That goal was also unassisted.
The two defenses stayed strong for the remaining 23:04 of regulation.
It looked like the match was headed to a second overtime, but
Kalamazoo finally booted another ball by sophomore goalie David Workman to
clinch its fourth victory of the season.
Workman finished with seven saves on the afternoon, while the
Hornets' goalie made eight stops.
Wooster, now 4-1-0 in 2001, will attempt to get back on the winning
track Tuesday (Sept. 11), when its hosts its second-straight match. This
time, the Scots welcome Capital University out of the Ohio Athletic
Conference to Carl Dale Memorial Field with kickoff slated for 4:30 p.m.
