Men's Soccer Wins Marietta Classic
Muskingum Box Score | Marietta Box Score
The College of Wooster men's soccer team came away from the
season-opening weekend (Sept. 1-2) as champions of the Marietta Classic
after sweeping past a pair of schools out of the Ohio Athletic Conference
by a combined score of 8-2.
On Saturday, Wooster erased an early 1-0 deficit and scored five
unanswered goals, including four in the second half, to defeat Muskingum
College by a four-goal margin. The Scots were fueled by an outstanding
debut from freshman forward Adam Milligan, who scored two goals and
assisted on two others.
Milligan's first tally tied the game midway through the first half
and it remained that way until senior Dan Kelly found the back of the net
just 2:07 into the second stanza with an assist coming from junior Andrew
Lewellen. Just over 20 minutes later, freshman Andrew DeBord put the match
away when he scored off of one of Milligan's assists. Wooster added two
late scores - an unassisted blast by Milligan and a goal off the foot of
junior Kurtis Dilyard.
Scot sophomore goalkeeper David Workman, who finished strong last
fall, made his debut as the full-time starter and produced an eight-save
outing in the win.
The next day, Wooster scored two goals in the final 15 minutes of
regulation to get past host Marietta College 3-1. Kelly was the offensive
star of this one, as he recorded goals No. 2 and No. 3 of the early season.
His first score came just 2:09 into the contest, but that ended up
being the lone goal of the opening half. Marietta tied it up on a penalty
kick early in the second.
Freshman Brian Goche provided what turned out to be the winning
goal with 14:03 to play on an assist from Dilyard, while Kelly put the game
out of reach six minutes later with an assist from junior Adam Zimmerman.
Workman performed well in goal again, registering eight saves.
The Scots, who started out 4-0 last season, continue their
non-conference tilts against OAC teams this week, as they travel to
Baldwin-Wallace College on Wednesday (Sept. 5) and Mt. Union College on
Saturday (Sept. 8).
