Men's Soccer Off to Best Start Since 1990

Kurtis Dilyard scored two goals to pace Wooster in its 6-1 victory over Muskingum.
With Tuesday's (Sept. 25) 6-1 thrashing of winless Muskingum College, The College of Wooster men's soccer team improved to 7-1-0 overall and is now off to its best start in school history since the 1990 season, when Wooster ended up 14-5-1 and played in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

In its second match-up of the year against the now 0-8-0 Fighting Muskies, Wooster was dominant. The Scots, who won the previous meeting 5-1, outshot and outcornered Muskingum 18-4 and 9-2, respectively.

It did take awhile for Wooster to get going, though, as the first half ended without a score. However, the Scots bombarded the Muskie goal in the second stanza, starting in the opening minute when junior Kurtis Dilyard scored the first of his two goals on an assist from freshman David Damon. Freshman Adam Milligan put the match away with back-to-back goals in the 62nd and 65th minutes, assisted by freshman Andrew DeBord and senior Colin Berdzar, respectively.

Tacking on insurance goals were freshman Tyler Heistercamp, Dilyard, and senior Dan Kelly with assists from sophomore Andy Rugaiganisa, Kelly, and freshman Ross Nickel, respectively.

Muskingum did prevent the shutout in the final minute when sophomore Brad Williams booted one past backup goalie Lance VanHaitsma, who played the final 15 minutes and made one save. Scot sophomore starter David Workman only needed to make two saves over the first 75 minutes, while Muskie freshman Zach Wagner came up with six saves in the loss.

The Scots, who maintained their No. 8 ranking in this week's Great Lakes Region poll by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, will next return to North Coast Athletic Conference action and host Denison University (4-3-0, 1-0-0 NCAC) on Saturday (Sept. 29) at 3 p.m.
