The College of Wooster men's soccer team opened the season 1-0-1 by shutting down Muskingum College 4-0 and playing Marietta College to a scoreless tie this weekend (Aug. 31-Sept. 1) at the Marietta Classic.
It was all Wooster on Saturday, scoring two goals in the first 10 minutes of action and then cruising to the four-goal decision. Senior Kurtis Dilyard got things started with an unassisted tally right in front of the net 5:17 in, followed by an 18-foot unassisted blast off the foot of freshman Brian Conaway 4:31 later.
The score remained 2-0 until early in the second, when the Scots were awarded a penalty kick, and senior Ryan McManus converted. Wooster received another penalty kick opportunity 13:58 later, and this time Conaway booted it in.
In his second career start, Scot net minder Andrew Darneille made nine saves for the shutout, while Muskingum's Zach Wagner stopped eight balls.
As the score indicates, Sunday's match featured defense. In fact, neither team had that many scoring opportunities, combining for 28 shots during 110 minutes of action.
Freshman David Treleven got the start in this one for Wooster and produced a pair of saves, while Marietta 'keepers Brian Samol and Adam Cerenka combined for two saves.
Wooster will look to remain unbeaten at its home debut on Wednesday (Sept. 4), when it welcomes Baldwin-Wallace College (1-1-0) to Carl Dale Memorial Field at 4:30 p.m.
