A stirring 3-2 comeback victory against Mt. Union College followed by a dominant 2-0 win over Olivet College at Carl Dale Memorial Field this weekend (Sept. 7-8) improved The College of Wooster's men's soccer team to 4-0-1 on the young season.
On Saturday afternoon, Wooster found itself trailing 2-1 in the waning moments with visiting Mt. Union attempting to clear the ball out of its goalie box, when one of its defenders tripped and touched the ball with his hand, thus giving the Scots a penalty kick. Freshman Brian Conaway knocked it in - his second goal of the match - at the 86:53 mark.
Instead of playing for overtime, Wooster went on the offensive again, and it paid off with sophomore Christopher Clyde touching in a crossing pass from senior Adam Zimmerman during the 90th minute. It was Clyde's first career goal.
The Purple Raiders scored the match's first goal in the 13th minute and then retook the lead in the 34th minute.
In his second career start, freshman David Treleven made three saves for the Scots en route to the win, while Mt. Union's Brian White stopped a pair of Wooster shots.
Sunday's match was not as competitive with the Scots holding a 23-2 shot advantage over Olivet. Despite dominating play, Wooster didn't get on to the board until the 57th minute, when freshman Jung Kim delivered on a centering pass from Zimmerman. Seventeen minutes later, Kim was on the passing end of a cross to sophomore Adam Milligan, who put the match away with a score.
In goal for the Scots Sunday was sophomore Andrew Darneille. He made one save, while working his third shutout of 2002, while Ben Rau produced 10 saves in net on the other end of the field.
Wooster will look to remain unbeaten on Wednesday (Sept. 11), when it continues non-league play at Lake Erie College with kickoff slated for 4:30 p.m.
