Gators Take Bite Out of Scots in NCAC Mens Soccer Opener
One of the reasons that made it so tough on Wooster, now 3-2-2 overall, was that Alleghenys initial score was an own goal. Early in the second half, the Gators (6-0-1) crossed the ball into the box, but in an attempt to clear it away, two Scot defenders went for the header and one accidentally knocked it into the left side of his own net. Allegheny built on that momentum-changing play, and in the 79th minute, put the match away when Josh Johnson got free in the box with his close-range shot hitting just inside the right post and then ricocheting into the back of the net. Overall, the Gators, who improved to 6-0-1, had more scoring chances, outshooting their hosts 13-6 and owning an 8-5 edge in penalty corners. Wooster goalie David Treleven, who never had a chance to get a glove on either of the goals, did make five stops on the day, while the Gators Brian Manougian had three saves. Now, the Scots will face an uphill battle the rest of the season, in terms of qualifying for and earning a high seed for the NCAC Tournament, but first they will return to non-conference action and host Otterbein College (3-4), the 2002 NCAA Division III runners-up, on Wednesday (Sept. 24). |
