The College of Wooster men’s soccer team didn’t have a comeback for a change. Its 24-match unbeaten streak in the regular season, dating back to the 2001 season, finally fell by the wayside as 18th-ranked John Carroll University held on for a 1-0 decision over the host Scots on Tuesday (Sept. 9) at Carl Dale Memorial Field.

The Blue Streaks (4-0) broke through for a goal in the 37th minute, when Josh Bernot split a pair of Wooster defenders and passed it ahead to an open Chris Heslep, who blasted the ball in for his third goal of the year.

The Scots (2-1-2), who had earned wins or ties eight times after falling behind during their aforementioned unbeaten streak, were limited to a couple of chances to pull even with John Carroll in the second half. On one corner kick, there was a scramble in front of the goal, however, Wooster was unable to get a toe on the ball, while a potential Scot breakaway was thwarted by a Blue Streaks’ foul.

Overall, there were few scoring opportunities for either squad, with a combined eight shots in the physical match, which included 45 fouls and four yellow cards.

John Carroll goalie Phil Mansell finished with five saves, while the Scots’ David Treleven had three.

Wooster has a week to regroup, as its next match will not be until Wednesday, Sept. 17, against Case Western Reserve University (0-1-1) in Cleveland at 4 p.m.
