Kim Scores Twice as Scots Go 1-0-1 at Marietta Classic
The College of Wooster men’s soccer team extended its regular season unbeaten streak to 22 with a win and a tie at the season-opening Marietta College Soccer Classic this weekend (Aug. 30-31). Wooster, which went 15-0-3 before losing in the postseason last fall, opened the four-team event with a convincing 2-0 decision over Juniata College and settled for a 1-1 tie against the host Pioneers in the championship tilt. The Scots also played to a deadlock with Marietta last year (0-0) at the same event. Wooster sophomore forward Jung Kim got his season off to a quick start, scoring in the first minute of the Juniata game and booting in the Scots’ lone goal of the Marietta match. Kim was assisted on his initial score by junior linemate Adam Milligan, while in the 34th minute, the Scots earned their two-goal edge when sophomore midfielder Andrew Etter found the back of the net for his first career score. Etter was helped out on the play by David Damon, marking the junior’s third career assist. Juniata had few scoring opportunities, as Wooster held a 22-6 shot advantage and 13-0 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore David Treleven played all 90 minutes in goal for the Scots, needing to make three saves to record the shutout. Sunday’s match was a very physical, defensive battle with the Pioneers. Wooster got off 17 shots to Marietta’s nine, but did not light up the scoreboard until the 73rd minute of action, when Kim put one in after a feed from junior Brian Goche. The Scots’ lead did not last long, though, as the Pioneers’ Marcus Vaca converted a penalty kick in the 75th minute. Treleven made one save, while Marietta’s two goalies were forced to make five saves to preserve the tie. Wooster will try and extend its streak in Columbus on Tuesday (Sept. 2), when the Scots will battle Capital University (1-1) at 5 p.m. |
