Brian Conaway

Brian Conaway scored the game-winning goal for the second time in as many games to lead Wooster over Heidelberg.

Behind the stellar play of its stars, Brian Conaway and Adam Milligan, and gritty defense, the College of Wooster men’s soccer team defeated Heidelberg College 2-1 today at Carl Dale Memorial Field in non-conference action. The win was the Scots’ third in a row and ups their record to 5-1-0 on the season.

‘Berg kept the game close in the first half, limiting Wooster to just five shots at the goal. Heading into half time the score was deadlocked at 0-0. In the second half, the Scots’ high-powered offense came alive behind the junior Conaway and the senior Milligan. At 58:07, sophomore Tim Presto booted a shot from midfield towards Milligan and the senior took it to the goal, nailing the shot past Heidelberg’s goalkeeper to put Wooster on the board first. The assist was Presto’s first point of the season, while Milligan’s goal was his team-leading fifth. However, the Student Princes battled back and knotted the score at 1-1 as Rob Crook was able to slice his corner kick past Scot goalie David Treleven at 76:47.

Milligan’s partner in crime, Conaway, put Wooster ahead on one of his patented breakaways down the right side of the field. The junior maneuvered around two defenders and shot the ball into the left corner of the goal past the goalie to get his second goal of the season. It was Conaway’s second game-winning goal in as many games. The Scot defense held off Heidelberg in the waning moments to earn the victory.

Treleven made six saves on the day, while ‘Berg’s goalie Chad Fogle registered 11 in a losing effort.

Wooster will begin its conference season on Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 4:30 p.m. as the 17th-ranked team in the nation, Ohio Wesleyan University, comes to Carl Dale Memorial Field.
