Scots Score 1-0 Overtime Victories at Heidelberg Invitational
The College of Wooster won the Heidelberg Men’s Soccer Invitational this weekend, emerging with back-to-back 1-0 overtime victories against Alma College on Saturday and the host ‘Berg Sunday. Wooster (4-0-2) found itself in a familiar spot each day, as four of its six matches (4-0-2) in 2005 have gone overtime after playing one such game all of last fall. After the opening 90 minutes saw limited scoring opportunities for Alma and Wooster, with the Scots holding an 11-6 shot advantage, Warren Swegal found the back of the net on the first shot of overtime. The Wooster sophomore received an assist on the play from senior Nate Little. It marked Swegal’s first career goal as well as Little’s first career assist. Brian Conaway was held without a point for the first time this season Saturday, but proved to be the difference maker against Heidelberg, as he provided the lone goal of the match with time winding down in the first overtime. Shortly after the Scots earned a corner kick, Conaway took a blast from 18 feet out and the ball hit off a defender before settling into the net. It was his fifth goal already this year. Playing flawless in goal all weekend was senior David Treleven, as the Wooster ‘keeper combined for five saves while recording shutouts No. 22 and 23 of his career. The Scots, who now have compiled a non-league record of 32-4-8 (.818) during the 2000s, will be off until Saturday’s North Coast Athletic Conference opener against Oberlin College (2-3-1). |
