Wooster, Ohio – The College of Wooster men’s soccer team opened up the 2006 season in style, defeating visiting Heidelberg College 3-2 at Carl Dale Memorial Field Friday evening.

The Fighting Scots struck first in the contest, when Nick Waychoff booted a pass by Aaron Oster-Beal into the back of the net in the third minute of play.

The game would be a stalemate through the next 40 minutes until The ‘Berg’s Sam Sunseri knotted the score 1-1 on a Matt Cox assist at the 45:35 mark.

The Scots fought back in the sixty-first minute when a shot attempt drew the Heidelberg goalie out of the net, allowing Steve Fracasso to sail a shot over his head for the score, putting the hosts back on top 2-1.

Heidelberg refused to back down, with Sunseri finding the net for the second time of the evening, this time on an assist by Billy Banks 70:12 into the game.

With time ticking away and the score tied, ‘Berg goalie Brian Periman was flagged for a foul, setting up the eventual game-winning penalty kick by Fracasso, his second of the day, and vaulting the Scots to victory.

The Scots controlled most of the contest, out-shooting The ‘Berg by a 7-4 margin. Scots goalkeeper Erik Larson was credited with one save during the contest, while The ‘Berg’s keepers recorded no saves on the day.

The Scots will return to action again Saturday when it plays host to Lake Erie College at Carl Dale Memorial Field. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
