WOOSTER, Ohio - The much anticipated match-up between regional powers The College of Wooster and Ohio Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon lived up to its hype, as both teams battled to a 0-0 tie in two overtimes at a chilly and damp Carl Dale Memorial Field.
Entering the game, No. 3 Ohio Wesleyan brought with it a 7-0-1 overall record and a first place ranking in the most recent Great Lakes regional coaching poll. The No. 18 Scots came to battle with a 7-1-0 overall record and the second place ranking in the Great Lakes region.
Both teams were fresh off of the first blemish to their records, with OWU
earning a tie with Ohio Northern University in double-overtime Wednesday
and Wooster being upended by Case Western 1-0 on Tuesday, also a double-overtime
affair.
With a lot on the line for the two North Coast Athletic Conference squads,
a 110 minute-long war was about to begin. The first period Ohio Wesleyan
seemed to have a slight edge, placing several balls near the Scot goal.
Wooster goalie Erik Larson made a pair of quality saves during the
period, including a diving save off of a Battling Bishop header mid-way
through the period.
The second period was much of the same for both squads, with the Scots able
to get off four Shots, but could not slip one past OWU goalkeeper Jamison
Dague. The closest Wooster would come to a score was a little more than
midway through the period, when Trevor Day headed a shot into the
upper portion of the net, but directly into a leaping Dague.
With added intensity and desperation, the teams fought through the first overtime, still to no avail, with the Battling Bishops claiming the only shot of the period.
OWU picked up the intensity in the second overtime, firing four shots at the Scots' goal, but Wooster's defense tightened up, preventing a score and ultimately ending the game at a stalemate.
For the game, Ohio Wesleyan held the advantage in shots by a 15-6 margin and also held a 4-1 edge in corners.
Defensively, Larson stopped seven shots for the Scots, including three in the second overtime, and recorded his fifth shutout of the year. Dague was credited with one save for the visitors.
With the tie, the Scots are now 7-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in NCAC action, while
Ohio Wesleyan is 7-0-2 and 1-0-1 in league play.
The Scots will return to action in one week, when they play host to NCAC
rival Wittenberg University Saturday, October 7 in a 3:30 p.m. kick-off.
