Goals from Waychoff and Ruter Result in 2-1 Win at Marietta
The College of Wooster men’s soccer team picked up its first win of the season Saturday night, as the Fighting Scots took a 2-0 lead before allowing an own goal late in the second half, which added up to a 2-1 victory during a physical contest with host Marietta College. The lone score of the first half came courtesy of junior Nick Waychoff after he received a pass through the defense from senior Warren Swegal. It marked Waychoff’s fifth career goal and Swegal’s first assist. A little over 10 minutes into the second, Wooster (1-2) gained the two-goal cushion via a Karl Ruter free kick, as the sophomore midfielder directed the shot over Marietta’s wall and inside the left post for his second goal this fall. During the 88th minute of play, the ball ended up in the Scots’ box off of a free kick by the Pioneers, and it was eventually deflected in by a Wooster defender. The own goal ended up being harmless, though, as Marietta (2-1-1) didn’t threaten to score again. Next, the Scots will make their home debut against Otterbein College (2-1) on Thursday, starting at 5 p.m. The match was originally scheduled to be at Otterbein, but was moved because of unplayable field conditions. |
