A mainstay on The College of Wooster coaching staff for over a quarter of a century, Hayden Schilling has built one of the most successful men’s tennis programs in the NCAA Division III Central Region.

In his 29 years at the helm, Schilling, also a professor of history at the College, has guided Wooster to 22 winning seasons and an overall record of 415-247 (.627). Among the team’s highlights since 1980 are four North Coast Athletic Conference championships (1985, 1989, 1990, 1996) and three appearances in the NCAA Div. III Tournament during a four-year stretch in the mid-1990s (1994, 1996, 1997).

Individually, five Scot players have earned All-American honors (Warren Cham-A-Koon, Steve Kuri, John Morlidge, Bob Savitt, James Weaver) while a number of others have competed in the NCAA singles’ and doubles’ national tourneys.

In 2004, Schilling, a five-time NCAC Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year (1985, 1990, 1991, 1996, 2004), took on the task of coaching Wooster’s women’s team, too, and guided it to a 10-10 record, a significant improvement over the previous season (5-11).

Active in the tennis community, Schilling has chaired the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Subcommittee, been a member of the ITA Regional Men’s Tennis Ranking Committee, and is a member of the United States Tennis Association (USTA), the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), and the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA). In addition, he founded Wooster’s Tennis Camp, which brought together some of the top college coaches and juniors in the Midwest.

A graduate of Southern Methodist University, where he played intercollegiate tennis, Schilling earned his master’s degree and Ph.D. at Vanderbilt University.
