After returning from a successful spring break trip, The College of Wooster men’s tennis team has just one match on tap for this week, but it could be a milestone one, as the Fighting Scots aim to give head coach Hayden Schilling his 400th career victory. On Friday, March 30, Wooster will travel to northwest Ohio for a match-up with Ohio Northern University (2-4), starting at 4 p.m. The Scots have never lost to Ohio Northern in 12 previous meetings, including last spring’s 5-2 decision. Schilling, who is in the midst of his 28th year as Wooster’s head coach, enters the week with a 399-227 career record (.637).

Spring Break Recap: The Scots won five of six matches during their spring break trip (March 16-21) to Hilton Head, S.C., improving their season record to 7-2. Highlighting the trip was a regional victory against Hope College (7-2) as well as a thrilling 5-4 decision over St. Lawrence University, while Wooster’s lone setback came at the hands of regionally-ranked Carleton College (0-9). Additionally, the Scots downed Hobart College (7-2), Roger Williams Univ. (9-0), and Messiah College (7-2).
At the top of the singles lineup, senior Will Morrison (Delaware, Ohio / Rutherford B. Hayes) won four times, upping his season mark to 6-3 at the No. 1 position and 18-14 for his career. Junior Grant D’Augustine (Cincinnati, Ohio / Turpin) held down the No. 2 spot for the majority of the trip, going 3-2 there, while junior Dave Albrechta (Fremont, Ohio / Fremont Ross) played the other match at No. 2 and went 2-3 overall, shifting from anywhere between the second and fifth slots.
Wooster’s depth was the key to its success, as the most successful individual was sophomore Pat Grab (Erie, Pa. / Cathedral Prep), who combined for five singles victories in the middle of the lineup (1-0 at No. 3, 4-1 at No. 4). Also of note, senior Brian Ebbitts (Mission Hills, Kan. / Shawnee Mission East) and sophomore Jeremy Dominik (Saint Marys, Ohio / Memorial) contributed three wins apiece, with Ebbitts going 2-2 at No. 3, 1-0 at No. 5 and Dominik 1-0 at No. 4, 2-2 at No. 6.
In doubles action, D’Augustine and Grab were the most successful pairing with a 5-1 record (2-1 at No. 1, 3-0 at No. 2). Also teaming up consistently were Albrechta and sophomore Sam Hickey (Sammamish, Wash. / Eastlake), as they went 0-2 at No. 1, 1-0 at No. 2, and 1-2 at No. 3, and Ebbitts and senior Dan Fleszar (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer), whom produced 0-2 and 3-0 records at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively
