After giving 28th-year head coach Hayden Schilling his 400th career victory in its last match, The College of Wooster men’s tennis team gets back to North Coast Athletic Conference play this week when it tangles with a pair of league foes. On Tuesday, April 3, the Fighting Scots will be at nearby Oberlin College (7-5, 2-0 NCAC) for a key match-up, starting at 4 p.m. Wooster topped Oberlin twice in 2006 – 6-1 during the regular season and 4-2 in the NCAC Tournament quarterfinals. The Scots will host Allegheny College (4-9, 2-0 NCAC) Saturday, April 7, at 11 a.m. Allegheny got the better of Wooster once in the 2006 season by a count of 5-2, but the Scots came back to knock off the Gators 4-3 in the third-place match at the NCAC tourney.
Last Week: Wooster played just one match last week, a non-conference affair, and won it to improve to 8-2 overall.
On March 30, the Scots defeated regional foe Ohio Northern University by a 5-4 margin, despite playing without the services of its No. 2 and No. 3 singles players. Wooster led 2-1 after doubles action, with Dan Fleszar (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) and Pat Grab (Erie, Pa. / Cathedral Prep) winning an 8-4 decision at No. 2, and Joe Chamberlin (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Northern) and Jeremy Dominik (Saint Marys, Ohio / Memorial) taking No. 3 8-5. In singles play, three Scot sophomores – Dominik, Sam Hickey (Sammamish, Wash. / Eastlake), and Chris Collen (Granville, Ohio / Granville) – stepped up to key the victory. Hickey and Collen earned decisive nods at No. 5 (6-1, 6-2) and No. 6 singles (6-1, 6-0), respectively, which left Dominik on the court with the teams tied 4-4. Dominik pulled out a three-set marathon over his opponent at No. 4 singles (6-2, 5-7, 6-4) to clinch the victory.
