Having won three of its last four matches, The College of Wooster looks to keep rolling during its three matches scheduled for this week. First, on Tuesday, April 1, the Fighting Scots will host North Coast Athletic Conference foe Oberlin College (6-5, 2-0 NCAC) at 4 p.m. The two teams played to a 5-4 decision last year, with Wooster eventually prevailing. The Scots will be on the road this weekend, first a short trip to Malone College (8-4) in Canton on Friday, April 4, at 4 p.m., followed by a key league match Saturday, April 5, at Allegheny College (10-3, 2-0 NCAC), at 1 p.m. During the 2007 regular season, Wooster cruised past Malone 8-1 and Allegheny 5-2, however, the Gators turned the tables on the Scots in the 3rd-place game of the NCAC Tournament, earning a 5-2 decision in their favor.

Last Week: Wooster won its lone match, evening its overall record at 5-5.

On March 27, the Scots, keyed by two three-set singles victories, edged past visiting Ohio Northern University 5-4 in a non-conference match at the Wooster Racquet & Fitness Club. Wooster had to make a comeback, as it fell behind 2-1 during the doubles action, with its lone point coming from Rob Ashmead (Grand Rapids, Mich. / City) and Andrew Garnett (Boulder, Colo. / Fairview) at the No. 3 position (8-5). In singles play, Ohio Northern, the defending Ohio Athletic Conference champions, had convincing wins at No. 1 (6-3, 6-2) and No. 4 (6-2, 6-0), but the Scots countered with easy triumphs by Ethan Arenstein (Cincinnati, Ohio / Sycamore) at No. 5 (6-2, 6-1) and Chris Collen (Granville, Ohio / Granville) at No. 6 (6-2, 6-3). The second and third singles matches each split their opening two sets. At No. 2, Grant D’Augustine (Cincinnati, Ohio / Turpin) lost the first 6-3, but pulled through for hard-fought second- and third-set wins of 7-5 and 6-3. Wooster’s Pat Grab (Erie, Pa. / Cathedral Prep) and Ryan Paul battled it out at No. 3, with Grab prevailing in the first 6-4 and then dropping a tough 7-5 decision in the second. Then, Grab bolted out to a 4-0 lead in the third and ended up earning a default victory as Paul was injured.
