Scot Men's Tennis Defeats Capital 5-2
The College of Wooster men's tennis team topped Capital 5-2 in a
non-conference battle on March 29, improving its overall mark to 4-7 on the
season. Depth was the key, as the Scots earned straight-set victories in
the lower portion of the singles lineup and picked up wins at second and
third doubles.
The Crusaders, who saw their record drop to 0-5, recorded their
points at first and second singles. Doug DiRosario beat sophomore Jake
Sintich 7-5, 6-2 at number-one, while Mark Rutherford posted a 6-2, 6-0 win
over junior Rob Ogg at the second spot.
Third singles provided a highly-competitive match, as Wooster
junior Matt Bierlein outlasted Matt Lazar by a score of 6-7 (7-9), 6-2, 7-6
(12-10). It marked Bierlein's first singles victory of the season.
Freshman Clint Bailey evened his overall singles record to 5-5 with
a 6-3, 7-5 decision over Bill Crossin at number-four. Sophomore Jim Sayed
easily defeated Daniel Green 6-1, 6-2 at fifth singles, while freshman
Brandon Lichtman cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jason Lundy at number-six.
The doubles play followed a similar format, as DiRosario and
Rutherford teamed up to take down Ogg and Sintich 8-3 at number-one.
However, Wooster's Lichtman and Sayed beat Crossin and Lazar at second
doubles and Bierlein and junior Kirk Lapham shutout Green and Lundy 8-0 at
number-three.
