Scot Men's Tennis Knocks Off Case Reserve

After starting the season 3-7, The College of Wooster men's tennis is rounding into form at the right time. The Scots most recent triumph came on Tuesday (April 25) in Cleveland, where they defeated Case Western Reserve 4-3 to up their overall record to 9-10.

The 4-3 score was the ninth time this season that Wooster has been involved in a match decided by one point. The Scots are now 3-6 in these matches.

The difference in this match, like many other close contests, is the doubles point. Wooster was able to grab that point Tuesday by winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Junior Rob Ogg and sophomore Paul Wiley were 8-3 winners at No. 2, while junior Matt Bierlein and sophomore Jim Sayed won 8-6 at No. 3. Sophomore Jake Sintich and freshman Brandon Lichtman fell 8-1 at No. 1 doubles.

In singles, the crucial victory for Wooster came at No. 5 singles, where freshman Clint Bailey upped his record to 11-7 with a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 win. Other singles winners for the Scots was Ogg at No. 1 (6-1, 7-5) and Sintich at No. 2 (6-2, 6-4).

At No. 3, Bierlein won the first set before falling 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. Sayed was a 6-1, 6-2 loser at No. 4, while junior Kirk Lapham lost 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.

The Scots close out their regular season schedule with a match at home on Thursday, April 27, against defending North Coast Athletic Conference champion Denison.
