Wooster Men's Tennis Falls to Defending Champs

In its final preparation for the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships, the College of Wooster men's tennis team lost to NCAC-defending champion Denison by a score of 6-1 today (April 27).

"This was a much tighter match than the score would indicate," explained Wooster head coach Hayden Schilling. "We had our chances to earn the point in doubles and then were unable to convert some early first set leads in singles."

The host Scots nearly earned the doubles point, but the Big Red edged out 8-6 wins at second and third doubles to offset sophomore Jake Sintich and junior Rob Ogg's 8-6 victory over Jeronie Barnes and Paget Neave at number-one doubles. Wooster junior Matt Bierlein and sophomore Jim Sayed lost to Brandon Ott and Cameron Vincent at number-two, while junior Kirk Lapham and sophomore Paul Wiley suffered a setback at number-three to Karamveen Premnarayan and Mitch Regenfuss.

Wiley gave the Scots their lone point by posting a gutsy 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Premnarayan at third singles. Also going three sets was Sayed, who eventually fell to Neave by scores of 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

Denison won the other singles matches in straight sets led by Barnes' 6-1, 6-3 victory against Ogg at number-one and Ott's 7-5, 6-1 win over Sintich at second singles. Rounding out the singles results, Bierlein lost to Vincent 6-1, 6-3 at number-four and freshman Clint Bailey was defeated 7-5, 6-3 by Regenfuss at number-six.

The Scots, who are now 9-11 on the season, have more than a week to prepare for the NCAC Tournament, which will be held at Granville, Ohio, on May 5-6.
